The complete design documentation for The Elder Scrolls VII exists on a single office whiteboard. Its contents are principally caves, drawn by a developer named Dave, numbering at last count twelve — a figure that includes one entity long disputed as a boat but since formally reconciled as a cave.
When the first whiteboard reached capacity, a second was procured. It arrived years ahead of schedule and remains entirely blank. No member of the team is willing to be the first to draw upon it; the pressure is immense. It is preserved as a monument to potential, and has been classified by Human Resources as “a wellness feature.”
A blank whiteboard, the studio maintains, is in many ways the most complete a whiteboard can be. It contains every game that could ever be made. This is the central tragedy of game development, and also why the project is behind schedule.
